Van Cuong Tran

Van Cuong Tran was born on the 10th May 1995 in Nam Dinh, Vietnam. He is from a family of four: himself, mother, father and sister. He grew up in a Catholic family and his parents were heavily involved in the parish activities. For example, Van’s mother used to organize the catechesis and youth activities in the parish. However, due to health problems his parents can no longer participate as much in the parish, especially after his father had an accident falling off some scaffolding.

According to Van, he saw his vocation to the priesthood at an early age and was very happy to receive this gift from God. As a consequence, he informed his parish priest who responded to him by saying “It was too soon.” Therefore, Van waited till he was old enough to pursue this vocation. He also studied architecture in university. At first, his parents were very concerned about Van’s desire to become a priest. This is because in Vietnam the son is seen as important in supporting and providing for the family; and considering he has only one sister this made it extra difficult. However, they eventually accepted Van’s decision. He is grateful for being in Rome, which for him helps his faith grow. Van values also the international community at Sedes Sapientiae where he is able to learn about the different cultures as well as interactions between people; and the emotional support they provide, which he particularly appreciated when he did not understand Italian at first. Furthermore, as an architect graduate, he is amazed by the great beauty of this “city of the world.” He remembers seeing photos of Rome, but was even more amazed when arriving and seeing it with his own eyes. He recalls entering St. Peter’s basilica and being impressed by its enormity.

Van appreciates a lot the academic support offered in the university. In his country, he says, it is difficult to engage with the professors and ask questions. Whereas in Rome it is much easier to speak with the professors and receive formation. After Van’s studies, he wants to take what he has learnt in Rome and apply it to his country in order to help bring change to the culture as well as perspective there. He is very thankful to his benefactors and greatly desires to meet them to personally express his gratitude for making this vocation possible. He assures them that he is praying for them every day and is looking forward to meeting them.
